Nielsen to target high-definition audience
Nielsen said yesterday that starting in November, it will begin tracking the number of high-def households, where high-def owners are located, and demographic info like income and age.
The data, which has been coveted by advertisers who’ve had a hard time targeting the nascent high-def crowd, will be available in January, 2008.

Hitachi plasma plant to be built in Malaysia
To meet demand in Australia and Southeast Asia and to cut production costs, Hitachi will reportedly spend about 3 billion yen to make plasma televisions in Malaysia.
Starting next month, Hitachi plans to make 10,000 units a month, company spokesman Masayuki Takeuchi said. Hitachi will use the facilities of its optical devices subsidiary in the country to make 42″ plasma HDTVs and will eventually expanding production to 50″ screens, Takeushi added.
The company said in October that it will spend about 8 billion yen to build a flat-panel television factory in the Czech Republic. The plant will begin production this summer with a monthly output of about 80,000 units. Also in October, Hitachi lowered its forecast for plasma HDTV shipments 20% to 800,000 units for the year ending March 31, 2007, citing slowing sales in the US and China.

Mobile HDTV in 2008 from Texas Instruments
Texas Instruments says it will enable 720p high-definition video on high-end mobile phones in 2008 and recently demonstrated what it calls the industry’s first application processor to playback 720p high-def video for mobiles at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Interestingly, Texas Instruments claims the 720p video can also be transferred to a projector of large-screen high-def set, if consumers aren’t really interested in watching HDTV on small-screen mobile phones.
