30% of BSkyB HD boxes experience problems

BSkyB may have to reprogramme over 100,000 high-definition television boxes after it emerged that an estimated three in 10 customers are experiencing problems.

Sky and some television manufacturers are believed to have rushed out their high defintion services just in time for the World Cup, with sales of HD Ready televisions in the UK topping £250 million in May alone.

Sky to spoil football fans; 138 live HD matches

Sky Sports will start the new season of live Barclays Premiership matches on Saturday 19 August. Broadcast in high defintion, Sheffield United will take on Liverpool in the first game of the season.

It will be the first live Premiership match to be broadcast live in high definition on Sky HD.  In total, 138 matches of the 2006/2007 season will be shown in high defintion.

Panasonic announces Blu-ray HD home theatre

Panasonic has announced the debut of its first Blu-ray Disc player (DMP-BD10), matching receiver (SA-XR700) and speaker system (SB-TP1000). Each will be available at retail in September 2006.

Toshiba’s $499 HD DVD player costs ‘over $700 to make’

Toshiba is subsidising its HD-A1 HD DVD player by at least $175 in a bid to buy the next-generation optical disc format success. So claims market watcher iSuppli, which took the machine to bits and totted up the cost of all the parts.

Global LCD-TV panel inventory to reach 15m units in 2006

TFT-LCD panel makers are expected to suffer from serious inventory issues throughout this year, with LCD-TV panel inventory likely to reach 15 million units in 2006, according to estimates from Taiwan-based panel makers.

The global supply for LCD-TV panels will total 55 million units in 2006, while worldwide demand for LCD TVs will only attain 40 million units, Taiwan-based panel makers noted.

The next-generation HDMI connector, HDMI 1.3, is nearing approval and will be fitted first to Sony’s PlayStation 3, according to US trade magazine TWICE.
