China expects huge jump in HDTV sales
High definition television shipments in China are expected to jump to over 3 million units this year from only 970,000 units last year.
However, despite the huge increase most HDTV owners are unaware of the specifications of their TV sets, implying a lack of understanding of the new medium, according to a study by Sino Market Research.
Awareness of HDTV is high in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, with over 98% of the respondents in Shanghai saying they have heard of HDTV. The figures for Beijing and Guangzhou are 84% and 76.1% respectively.
Worryingly, as many as 85% of HDTV owners surveyed said they did not know the resolution of their HDTV sets.
While HDTV standards are not yet formed in China, the general standard is 720i - a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels.
China is expected to announce its digital broadcast standards at the end of the month.
China has committed to broadcasting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games using HDTV technology. Much like the 2006 World Cup, this should help the adoption of the technology immensely.
