Consumers ‘will not be put off by PS3 cost’
The fact that the PlayStation 3 will cost considerably more than its next-generation rivals will not deter gaming enthusiasts from making a purchase, a Sony representative claims.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Jack Tretton, co-chief operating officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America, indicated that the cheaper prices of Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 cannot compete with the basic advantages of owning a PlayStation 3.
“Once the consumers get their hands on a PS3 and understand what’s under the hood, I think price will not be a factor in the decision-making process,’ he said.
Mr Tretton also talked up the PlayStation 3’s Cell processor, which is 40 times more powerful than its predecessor and will run ten-times more quickly than current PC chips.
When added to the inclusion of a Blu-ray high definition DVD player, Mr Tretton insisted that this makes Sony’s console the obvious choice for serious gamers and those looking for an established home cinema system.
Sony will reportedly spend $30 million to place PlayStation 3 consoles in 15,000 US and Canadian display kiosks in the next couple of months, in what has been interpreted by analysts as evidence of the palpable market threat from both the Wii and the Xbox 360.
Microsoft’s console has now been available for a year, giving it an immediate head start, while Nintendo is luring in customers by making its internet browser free to Wii users until the end of June 2007.
