HDTV confusing viewers
At least one in five TV viewers are totally confused about what is needed to receive HDTV; 20 per cent of people survyed by uSwitch.com did not realise that they need a HD-ready television to receive the crystal clear pictures promised by high definition TV.
Half of those surveyed were unaware they would also need a new HD set-top box, and two-thirds were clueless that they would have to pay a monthly subscription charge.
uSwitch’s Chris Williams said: “Customers are confused - both as to what equipment they need to buy, and what the total cost will be,”
“Although there has been a lot of publicity surrounding the HD broadcast of the BBC’s and ITV’s coverage of the World Cup on ‘free-to-view’ channels, viewers will still need to pay at least £10 a month to receive the HD service from either Telewest or Sky.”
Interestingly, theresearch calculated that the total cost of getting HDTV could be around £1,900 in the first year.
