High defintion system adds sophistication to home entertainment

The ultra-slim HTS9800W home cinema system combines contemporary styling with the very latest innovations including HDMI connectivity, 720p/1080i video upscaling for near high definition video quality, multichannel Super Audio CD playback and wireless rear speakers – to deliver an unrivalled viewing and listening experience from a one-box solution.

Already the winner of a prestigious 2006 CES Innovation Award, the system is one of the first to offer Dolby Digital EX 6.1 surround sound processing using wireless rear speakers. Significantly this ensures there are no wires trailing down the room, maintaining the clean aesthetics.

Blessed with stunning contemporary looks, the HTS9800W is the perfect partner for a high definition flat TV, complimenting the décor of any home interior. The system comprises of the main DVD unit, three front speakers, three wireless rear speakers – connected to a wireless receiver box – and a subwoofer. Both the main unit and flat-panel speakers are afforded a sleek flat design and can be wall-mounted or placed freestanding, offering unique flexibility.

Furthermore, in keeping with Philips’ philosophy, the eye-catching appearance also offers simple operation. Unsightly, bulbous buttons are replaced by slick touch-screen control, with backlighting illuminating key functions, while the disc slot is more practical than the conventional tray, particularly when wall-mounting.

The HTS9800W delivers exemplary picture and audio performance. Video upscaling boosts already pristine DVD pictures to near high definition quality at 720p and 1080i resolutions, while extensive disc playback significantly includes DVD, DVD+/-R/RW, (S)VCD, SACD, MPEG4, CD-R/RW, MP3, WMA/MP3-CD and JPEG CDs.

The powerful digital amplifier has a generous 800W Total RMS output across the 6.1 channels and is equipped with Dolby Digital EX, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II decoders. The flat-panel speakers each utilise a ribbon tweeter with Neodymium magnet assembly for razor sharp detail and smooth precision in the higher frequencies, while two 3-inch woofers cover the midband. Bass is supplied by the subwoofer which is equipped with a 6.5-inch high-efficiency woofer delivering deep low-frequency output down to a menacing 30Hz.

Connectivity offers a number of ways to hook up to a flat display and other A/V equipment and includes HDMI for pure digital pictures and sound, premium-quality progressive scan-enabled component video output, RGB Scart output and digital coaxial input for connecting audio devices such as CD player or MP3 player.

Wow, that is one slick system.

I had better start saving up for one.

I have heard these will be going for £700 a pop.

Only problem is that it will shame all the other electronics I have in my living room…

Yeah, £700 is a lot of money.

I think I will wait and see how the reviews turn out.

I am particularly interested in the high defintion and upscaling quality.  I am curious as to how good the 3 wireless rear speakers will be as well.

I will be getting a loan to buy a Philips Ambilight 37” High Def - 37PF9731D
and also this surround sound system to go with it.
Can anyone tell me:
- What’s the product code for a white version?
Because I enter HTS9800W in a google search and it shows the system in both black and white…

- Also, Where can I get one?  Froogle turns up only 4 sites, they’re all out of stock, Dixons don’t even recognise the product code…

Appreciate your help.  Cheers guys.
