Manufacturers of HDTV equipment seeing boom in sales

’HDTV’ is the key buzzword at Broadcast Asia 2007 where trade and industry players check out the latest high definition gear.

HD cameras are giving manufacturers a good signal for the future as more production houses and broadcasters zoom into the action.

Manufacturers said the take-up rate for HD equipment is rising, with Singapore and Thailand leading the HD revolution in the Asia Pacific region.

Max Kang, Assistant General Manager, Panasonic Systems Asia-Pac, said: “About 60 to 70 percent of new purchases are in high definition. Compared to two years ago, the growth is about 150 percent.”

Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) said high definition content producers would need some time to produce good quality programmes.

Yeo Chun Cheng, Chief Information Officer, MDA, said: “When you shoot something in HD, your props, the way you shoot and the techniques you adopt may have to change because of the high resolution. This is learnt through experience, so there is an experiential curve.”

MDA also said Singapore viewers can expect more high definition content from MediaCorp and StarHub as well as SingTel’s upcoming Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).
