Mitsubishi set to introduce laser HDTVs at CES

Mitsubishi will be exhibiting the latest ‘laser HDTV’ technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 2008. Several companies have been attempting to perfect the technology in preparation for mass production and it appears they must be close.

The long awaited laser TV technology is expected to provide brighter and deeper images using lightweight screens that also improve energy efficiency - adding a new category to the premium HDTV market.

According to Mitsubishi, the laser technology creates greater image quality with a more extensive colour range than either plasma or LCD while designs will appear even more inconspicuous.

The Mitsubishi model uses rear projection technology, which hasn’t always been popular in the UK due to the restrictive sizes of our living rooms. But, the 62in screen will feature a depth of only about 10in with only a very slim frame as advanced plastics will replace glass components in the rear projector, making the large unit lighter.

Instead of using traditional mercury projection lamps, the laser TV uses separate red, green and blue semi-conductor lasers supported by a high-definition chip. This produces more realistic black levels as lasers allegedly shut off totally when not needed, frame-to-frame, creating a more natural blackness.

The introduction will probably create more confusion for consumers who are still struggling to decide between LCD and plasma but it is expected to take HDTV to another level both technically and cosmetically.
