Pioneer launches new 1080p HD plasma in US

Pioneer has shown that it is still right behind plasma screen technology with the introduction of a brand new model.

It will begin shipping the world’s first 50-inch 1080p plasma display straight away.

LCD screens have been encroaching on the large screen sector – traditionally the domain of plasma screen technology.

The company has described its Elite PureVision PRO-FHD1 as a “technological milestone” with images that create a “near 3D effect”.

There is no doubting that it is aimed at the top of the market, as the screen will be available from specialty retailers for a suggested price of $10,000.

More than two million pixels are present in the 50-inch screen.

In order to achieve that, Pioneer had to manufacture the world’s smallest pixels measuring 0.576 millimetres, which it says results in a stunning on-screen picture.

“Viewers can see tiny beads of sweat on an athlete’s face as well as the stitches on the football as it flies through the air,” the company says.

“Some say it makes it easier to tell when the lead actor takes a break and lets the stunt double take over.”
