Rumours emerge of further Blu-ray problems

Large scale launches of Blu-ray high definition disc players may have to be pushed back until late in the year, according to reports emanating from China.

The country’s Commercial Times has said that Blu-ray lead developer Sony has worries over the amount of diode components necessary for the players that it can produce.

The diodes are needed for the optical drives inside the players, but demand may outstrip supply.

Sony currently supplies the components to BenQ, Philips and Lite-On.

Although Sony has committed to shipping as many as two million of its Playstation 3 video consoles by Christmas this year, that could be put in jeopardy if the rumours of shortages prove to be true.

Demand for the consoles is likely to be very high and Sony will be hoping to learn the lessons from the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

There were serious shortages of that console when it was launched late last year.
