Samsung: LCD HDTV market leader

Samsung led LCD TV makers in worldwide shipments and sales in the first quarter of this year, according to market research firm iSuppli.

The iSuppli numbers were reported by TWICE magazine.

According to iSuppli, Samsung captured 16.83 percent of the global LCD TV market, shipping 2.4 million sets in the first quarter.

Sony was second with 12.6 percent market share and 1.8 million sets shipped.

Philips was third with a 12.2 percent market share and 1.7 million sets shipped. However, Philips suffered a 26 percent decline in sales from the fourth quarter, according to TWICE.

The top five leading LCD makers suffered declines in the first quarter, but Philips’ fall was the largest. iSuppli said worldwide LCD shipments fell eight percent in the first quarter compared to the fourth quarter.

First quarter TV sales and shipments historically decline after the busy fourth quarter holiday shopping rush.

“However, Philips of The Netherlands fared the worst among these companies, with its shipments dropping to 1.7 million units, down from 2.3 million in the fourth quarter. Philips’ global LCD-TV market share dropped to 12.2 percent in the first quarter, down from 15.1 percent in the fourth quarter,” iSuppli said in a statement.
