Warner: Retailers back dual HDTV DVD
Warner Bros. said today that several leading retailers will carry its new dual high-def DVD, according to Reuters.
The disc will playback both Blu-ray and HD-DVD editions of movies and TV shows. Warner Bros. hopes it will help end the format war between Sony’s Blu-ray and Toshiba’s HD-DVD. The two formats are not compatible, meaning one disc won’t play on the other’s player.
However, Warner’s ‘Total HD’ disc, which was unveiled this week at the Consumer Electronics Show, will allow consumers to use it regardless of which high definition player they own.
The studio said Best Buy, Circuit City and Amazon.com have agreed to sell the disc, which is expected to be available in the second half of the year.
“It behooved us to figure out a way to transition (consumers) from standard definition to high definition DVDs,” Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Bros. Entertainment, told Reuters. “From our perspective we don’t care if it’s Blu-ray or HD-DVD. We just want the transition to occur.”
